History of Armor sets

Overview

An armor set is a group of Legendary Armor pieces that together give a bonus: a first bonus at 2 pieces and a second at 4. The Edge of Fate rework that introduced Armor 3.0 (July 15, 2025) is when the current stat, archetype and tier system began; sets on older expansions have their own pages.

Set bonuses

  • 2 pieces: the first bonus. Any two pieces from one set count.
  • 4 pieces: the second, stronger bonus. Four of a set's five pieces are enough, which leaves a slot for an Exotic (per We Want Destiny 3 for AION Adapter and Thunderhead).
  • Mixing: you can commit to one set, or mix two sets for two 2-piece bonuses (Shattered Vault).

In practice the bonuses suit specific builds:

  • AION Adapter: 2 pieces, Force Absorption (final blows with rocket, grenade launchers or micro-missiles reduce area-of-effect damage). 4 pieces, Reactive Shock (a burst when taking melee damage while Force Absorption is active).
  • Thunderhead: 2 pieces, License to Thrill (grenade or the Nanotech Tracer Missiles trait gives stacking point-blank resistance). 4 pieces, Lethal Weave (grenade energy from unravelling combatants).
  • Techsec: 2 pieces, Wrecker (increased kinetic damage to shields, overshields, vehicles and constructs). 4 pieces, Concussive Rounds (kinetic shockwave on powerful combatants or shield breaks).
  • Resonant Fury: 2 pieces, Resonant Plating (health regenerates after melee damage from a powerful combatant). 4 pieces, Siphoning Touch (melee hits build stacks, which switching weapons heals and consumes).
  • Bushido (Hunter, PvE and PvP): 2 pieces, Iaido; 4 pieces, Unfaltering Focus.
  • Last Discipline (PvP): 2 pieces, Terminal Velocity (faster reloads for primary weapons after primary final blows); 4 pieces, Power Loader (Orb of Power pickups grant Special ammo progress).

Archetypes and tiers

Armor 3.0 gives each piece an archetype (which stats it rolls) and a tier from 1 to 5. Tier 5 pieces add a tuning socket. Full detail, including the disagreement over archetype counts, is in Armor 3.0.

Edge of Fate sets

TheGamer's Edge of Fate rework guide lists eight sets: AION Renewal, AION Adapter, Techsec, Bushido, Last Discipline, Twofold Crown, Lustrous and Collective Psyche. The wiki's pages say Lustrous is the Solstice set, so treat its inclusion in that list as unconfirmed.

Acquisition

Sets come from different places:

  • World activities: AION Adapter and AION Renewal drop from exploring Kepler; sources differ on the exact activity name.
  • Reputation: Thunderhead pieces are unlocked by ranking up with Nimbus on Neomuna (Destinypedia), though the in-game source line reads "Exploring Neomuna".
  • Raids: Resonant Fury comes from the Vow of the Disciple raid; Collective Psyche comes from The Desert Perpetual raid (released July 19, 2025).
  • PvP: Last Discipline is a Crucible set; sources disagree on the playlist.
  • Seasonal: Lustrous is a Solstice set forged with Solstice Alloy.

Notes

  • Sources disagree on several set sources (Bushido, Thunderhead, AION Adapter). Check each set page and in-game before farming.
  • Some older sets (for example Veritas (armor set) and Taken King (armor set)) have bonus data but no written description yet.
