History of Hellmouth

Overview

The Hellmouth is a Hive pit on The Moon, in the Ocean of Storms. It refers both to an underground Hive fortress and to the surface built around the pit. It is where Eris Morn's fireteam went to kill Crota. Crota is said to have fortified it as the staging ground for his invasion of Earth, and after the Great Disaster he retreated into its depths. The pit's deepest rupture leads to the Oversoul Throne, Crota's throne world. Public events near it appear in Symphony of Death.

The First Hunt for Crota

A fireteam led by Eriana-3, with Eris Morn, Omar Agah, Sai Mota, Vell Tarlowe and Toland, went after Crota for the Great Disaster. Vell was killed by Alak-Hul and Verok at the Temple of Crota, the entrance to the Hellmouth. Inside, Toland was destroyed by Ir Yût, the Deathsinger, and Sai died fighting Omnigul. Omar was captured by the Heart of Crota and reduced to an insect form. Eris was the only survivor.

Later history

Eris later pointed Guardians toward the Hellmouth as the route to Crota. The six-Guardian Crota's End raid took the team down through the Hellmouth to Crota's throne world, where Crota was killed.

Areas

The Temple of Crota connects to the Hellmouth by tunnels, and another tunnel links to Archer's Line. Chambers inside include The World's Grave, the Chamber of Night, the Summoning Pits and the Shrine of Oryx. Surface public events in the area have included Warsat Down and Vex Invasion in Destiny 2, with Glimmer Extraction and Eliminate the Target in the original Destiny.
