History of Key Codes

Overview
Key Codes were a seasonal currency of Season of the Splicer. Their only use was to open the Conflux Chest at the end of an Override run; the Loot Cache there was free for everyone, but the Conflux Chest needed a Key Code (per ProGameTalk).
Acquisition
Key Codes were crafted from Ether using the Splicer Gauntlet (found in the quests tab). Ether came from activities such as Lost Sectors, public events, strikes, Crucible and Gambit. The Gauntlet had limited Key Code slots, raised to 4, 5 and 6 by its three upgrade tiers (ProGameTalk); press coverage also reports a base cap of three and a cost of 50 Ether per code, which the fetched guide did not confirm.
Related
Corrupted Key Codes were a separate item that dropped from enemies and opened Corrupted Conflux Chests in Corrupted Expunge missions, with the same loot pool as a Conflux Chest (per TheGamer). The later Seraph Key Codes of Season of the Seraph are a different currency.
