Saharan Contested Zone

Overview

The Saharan Contested Zone is a region of Earth during the Dark Age. It was controlled by Warlord Kandak, who did little to protect his people from Fallen raiders. The name is used in in-game Annals entries and in Destiny 2 item descriptions.

History

The Zone's civilians were protected in secret by Enitan, a Hunter and Lightbearer known as the Red Moon Phantom. She had died under Kandak's rule and was revived by a Ghost, which left her without memory of her past. Believing Kandak's protection inadequate, she secretly attacked Fallen groups that threatened residents. Kandak feared another Risen warrior operating in his territory, so he banned all Risen from the Zone and put a bounty on her after she killed a Fallen Kell. Her campaign against the Fallen raiders is what earned her the Red Moon Phantom name.

Appearances

The Zone first appears in Destiny 2: Forsaken, where it is referenced through the Red Moon Phantom Grips and the Cloak of Five Full Moons. Those item descriptions date from September 2018.
