Overview
Blood Magic has two effects while you stand in any Rift: damaging a target marks it, and you deal extra damage to marked targets; weapons matching your equipped Super also gain an additional damage bonus. Weapon final blows while standing in the Rift pause its countdown, extending its duration. Bungie added the target-marking and matching-Super weapon bonus in the October 2024 tuning update.
Bungie announced a coming combat swap penalty on June 26, 2025. The July 15, 2025 Update 9.0.0.1 patch notes shipped a 10-second cooldown before the perk activates when switching to Sanguine Alchemy in combat. Bungie described the rule as temporary pending a more holistic solution.
