Overview

Shores of Time was a Crucible map in the original Destiny, set on Venus in the Maat Mons region. It featured prominent Vex architecture, sulfurous caves, and natural rock formations characteristic of Venus's harsh environment. The map was well-regarded for its balanced layout and became one of Destiny's flagship Crucible locations, appearing in modes including Control and Clash.

Map Layout and Objectives

The map featured three control zones arranged strategically across multiple elevations. The layout emphasized both long-range sight lines across the open vista and close-quarters engagements in cave systems and corridors. Environmental hazards, including sulfur vents and unstable platforms, added tactical depth. Heavy ammo spawns were positioned to create decisive team engagements, with control of central positions providing spawn advantage during Control matches.

Crucible Gameplay

Popular strategies centered on establishing dominance over the central zone and rotating teams toward heavy ammo spawns. The verticality of the map's design rewarded classes with mobility options and jump enhancement abilities. Scout rifles and longer-range weapons were favored for the open-air sections, while close-quarters weapons excelled in cave entrances. The environmental hazards and narrow passages meant that team cohesion was essential for success.

Legacy and Destiny 2

Shores of Time was not directly ported to Destiny 2, but was conceptually reimagined as Distant Shore, a Crucible map set on Nessus in the Arcadian Strand. While the setting and thematic details changed, key design principles—balanced three-point control zones, emphasis on both ranged and close-quarters engagement, and environmental verticality—carried forward into the newer iteration.
