Targe

Targe was the Ghost of Commander Zavala, voiced by James Urbaniak.

Overview

Targe was quiet and steadfast ("as silent and steady as a rock"), rarely offering advice but deeply concerned for Zavala. In The Final Shape, when Zavala is tormented by memories of failure, Targe reminds The Witness that Zavala rejected its recruitment. When the Witness tries to claim Zavala, Targe confronts it, saying "I see fear", and is crushed by the Witness, sacrificing himself to save his Guardian. His name derives from an Old English word for "shield".
