Iron Banner: Fortress
"The Guardian who controls their position masters the flow of the battle. Hold your ground!" —Lord Saladin
Control the zones—and watch your head!
Iron Banner: Fortress is a Control variant in Iron Banner that blends traditional zone capture with a high-value objective guarded by Cabal turrets. Lord Saladin's directive—"The Guardian who controls their position masters the flow of the battle. Hold your ground!"—captures the mode's emphasis on strategic positioning and resource control.
Overview
Fortress combines standard Control gameplay with dynamic objective phases. Teams capture and defend three control points to earn points toward a 150-point victory threshold, or claim the higher score when the match time expires. However, twice during a match, all zones lock down and a temporary high-value zone appears, defended by Cabal turrets. This forces a PvE-PvP hybrid engagement where teams must eliminate both enemy Guardians and Cabal forces to claim the bonus points.
Gameplay Mechanics
Standard Control zones function as expected: capturing a zone grants points to a team, and holding multiple zones accelerates point accumulation. When a team controls all three zones, they enter a hunting phase where zone defenses briefly lock the points neutral, preventing runaway leads.
Approximately halfway through the match, all capture zones become locked and a destructible Cabal-controlled zone spawns at a central map location. This zone is defended by turrets that pose a genuine threat to approaching Guardians. Teams must coordinate to suppress the Cabal turrets while eliminating enemy Guardians competing for zone control. Successfully capturing the Cabal zone grants a substantial point bonus, making it a critical strategic objective. The team that secures it gains significant momentum, though the temporary nature of the zone (it despawns after a period) resets the objective focus back to the standard three capture points.
Strategic Considerations
Fortress rewards teams that can transition between different combat scenarios: traditional zone-based positioning during Control phases, and aggressive combined-arms tactics during Cabal encounters. Heavy weapons and ability-intensive Supers gain additional value for breaking Cabal turret defenses. Teams should designate players to suppress turrets while others focus on zone capture. The predictable timing of Cabal spawns allows skilled teams to prepare positioning and ability economy in advance.
Iron Banner matches disable all Power Level advantages, so victory depends on gunplay, positioning, ability usage, and team coordination rather than gear.
Rewards
Iron Banner: Fortress rewards follow the standard Iron Banner drop list: exclusive weapons (hand cannons, pulse rifles, machine guns, trace rifles) and armor pieces with high stat totals. Participation grants Iron Banner rank progress toward Lord Saladin's reputation; reaching Legend rank resets the rank and unlocks Masterwork upgrade materials.
