The Reckoning

Venture into the mysterious Haul that the Drifter tows behind his ship to reckon with greater powers.

The Reckoning was a four-player PvE activity added in Season of the Drifter (Year 2, Season 6) and set inside The Haul, the object the Drifter tows behind his ship. It launched in March 2019 and was vaulted with Beyond Light.

Unlocking

The mode is opened through a Drifter quest, which provides a Weak Synthesizer. Combining that with a Synth crafts a mote, and only one mote can be held at a time. Early guides differed on the trigger: some tied access to finishing Gambit Prime matches. The activity is started from the Director, and you can join a run already in progress.

A mote is wagered at the Bank at the edge of the large hole at the start of the activity. Wagering is needed to take Gambit Prime armor from the launch area after the boss, but the activity can be played without one.

Tiers

Each tier has a recommended Power level: Tier I 650, Tier II 670 for its enemies, and Tier III 690, with at least 680 needed to enter.

  • Tier I: The fireteam has about six minutes to reach 100% Dominance over the Taken. Deaths and slow play lower Dominance, while powerful enemies raise it sharply. Reaching 100% summons a Taken boss, which must be defeated within about three minutes. Modifiers rotate, and launch-era examples include Blackout.
  • Tier II: Requires wagering two Synths for a blue mote. The fireteam activates six circular zones on the bridge while fending off enemies. A Hermit drops a Well of Light when killed, and the team stands in it to attack two Sword Knights. Each completed section adds 30 seconds to a strict timer.
  • Tier III: Requires a Powerful Synthesizer from the Drifter and a purple mote made from three Gambit Prime archetype motes, and it is only available after Tiers I and II. The Hermit and Sword Knights are replaced by the Shade of Oryx.

The boss variants and encounter details above reflect the activity as launched in 2019.

Rewards

Tier II and Tier III bosses always have a chance to award a Gambit Prime weapon, and the chance rises after each boss kill without one (update 2.2.1, April 2019). Lonesome and Spare Rations are among the weapon rewards, and Gnawing Hunger, Doomsday and Just In Case are Tier III rewards.

Armor comes in four sets, Collector, Invader, Reaper and Sentry, one per Gambit Prime role, in Illicit, Outlawed and Notorious rarities for Titan, Hunter and Warlock. Tier III armor was the strongest at launch.

Retirement

The Reckoning was vaulted into the Destiny Content Vault on 10 November 2020, with the rest of the Year 2 seasonal content, when Beyond Light launched.
