Trait

Trickle Charge

Receiving or discharging Bolt Charge partially loads the magazine from reserves.

Overview

Trickle Charge is a basic Trait perk introduced in Season 28. When the player receives or discharges Bolt Charge, the weapon's magazine is partially refilled from reserves. The perk enables weapons with Bolt Charge mechanics to sustain fire longer, reducing downtime between damage phases. An enhanced version, introduced with Renegades in December 2025, refills a larger amount.

How It Works

Trickle Charge triggers in two scenarios:

  1. Receiving Bolt Charge: When you gain Bolt Charge (typically through mods, ability usage, or seasonal mechanics), the perk refunds ammunition.
  2. Discharging Bolt Charge: When you spend or exhaust Bolt Charge to activate a weapon effect, the perk restores ammunition.

The refund is partial, not complete, meaning a few rounds return to the magazine from reserves. This sustains offensive pressure without eliminating ammo pressure entirely. The enhanced variant returns significantly more ammunition per trigger, providing more noticeable sustain.

Mechanics and Synergies

Bolt Charge is a seasonal mechanic tied to Season 28 and Renegades weapons. Weapons with Bolt Charge generation (like Voltaic Shade) build the meter through kills or sustained fire. Trickle Charge multiplies the value of the Bolt Charge system by ensuring players are never starved for ammo while engaging at range or in group combat. This creates a feedback loop: dealing damage builds Bolt Charge, spending Bolt Charge returns ammo, allowing more shots to build more Bolt Charge.

The perk pairs exceptionally well with:

  • Weapons with fast fire rates that generate Bolt Charge quickly (Submachine Guns, Sidearms)
  • Weapons designed for extended engagements where ammo conservation matters
  • Builds that trigger Bolt Charge through ability usage or armor mods

Weapons with Trickle Charge

Trickle Charge appears on 24 weapons across multiple weapon types:

Practical Use

In Strikes and Nightfalls, Trickle Charge enables aggressive sustained fire without ammo conservation stress. In Gambit, the perk allows longer invader pressure or extended defensive stands. In Dungeons and Raids, weapons with Trickle Charge benefit from the uptime it provides during extended boss phases.

Compared to other ammo-returning perks like Rampage or fixed-drop perks, Trickle Charge's reliance on the Bolt Charge system makes it most effective on weapons specifically designed around that mechanic. On weapons without Bolt Charge generation, the perk remains active but less valuable.

History

Trickle Charge debuted in Season 28 as part of the Bolt Charge weapon system. The enhanced variant was added with Renegades (December 2025) and becomes available on newly rolled weapons from that season onward.
